Postcards From My Seaside Town

Postcards From My Seaside Town is a new project led by a team of Carousel’s learning disabled artists, working alongside world-leading immersive theatre company dreamthinkspeak

2023/24 was the first year of this three-year project, and we have been working with older learning disabled residents from different coastal towns, discovering their fascinating, unique and important experiences of living by the seaside.

Our team ran creative workshops including music, poetry, radio interviews, and film, for residents and learned about their personal connections with their hometown; the locations, activities, utilities and relationships that were important to them as individuals and as a community and by exploring old film and photos together, we reflected on how their town has changed over the last 150 years.

We had the best time ever when Carousel visited us at Life Skills Folkestone. I enjoyed not one thing but everything! I learned that I could use my voice to make noises. Learning new skills was rocking and awesome.  Ayden, LSC Folkestone

We will continue developing this work next year, working further with learning disabled residents, the organisations who support them, and key cultural organisations along the south coast, as we start developing our plans and creating content for multi-artform, multi-sensory live and digital performances in 2025.
