Join our Volunteer Team

Carousel is an arts organisation with a national reputation for high-quality, ambitious and ground-breaking work produced by learning disabled artists.

We are seeking up to ten recruits to join our volunteer team, a crucial role in supporting our work.

Over 10 weeks, you will learn how Carousel supports learning disabled people to have an active role in the arts and discover ways we are working to promote an inclusive and welcoming culture, both locally and around the UK.

Trainee volunteers will be offered practical experience, training and support throughout the training and will develop the skills necessary to continue to work as a member of the Carousel volunteers team long-term.

More details:

Sessions will run between 30 September and December 2024, including in-person group sessions in Brighton, 1:1 and group online sessions, and active roles in Carousel’s events projects.

Dates for these sessions are:

Monday 30th September or Thursday 3rd October (30-minute slots)

Thursday 3rd October (6:30pm to 8:30pm)

Tuesday 14th October or Wednesday 15th October (30-minute slots)

Thursday 31st October (6:30pm to 8:30pm)

Thursday 7th November (6:30pm to 8:30pm)

Thursday 28th November (6:30pm to 8:30pm)

Tuesday 2nd December

Monday 9th December

Plus eight hours of practical training alongside the above.

Person Specification:

There are a range of volunteer roles at Carousel and so we are looking for applicants who bring with them a range of experiences and skills. Being artistic is not an essential requirement.

To volunteer with Carousel, you need to be:

  • DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked at an advanced level. Carousel will arrange and cover the costs of this. This is required as volunteers will be working with vulnerable adults and young people.

  • Aged 18 or over

  • Able to commit to attending all training sessions and a selection of practical projects

  • Committed to working with learning disabled people and the creative arts

  • To live in, or be able to travel to Brighton and Hove

  • Willing to continue to volunteer with Carousel beyond the completion of the training

Application Process:

Complete this application form by 5pm on 13/09/2024.

Complete this Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to an informal interview on 18, 19 or 20 September 2024.

“I did this training course in 2012 and it totally changed my life. What I learned then has an impact on me every day in my work as an SEND teacher.

It opened my eyes to the breadth of talent within the learning disabled arts scene, prompted me to think about the arts world and the role of facilitator in a different way and ultimately opened the door to the most exciting career working with the most impressive and creative people.

This was the single best value and most worthwhile training experience of my life. Do it! Thank you Carousel.”
